A few years later, Schwenck's mom joined his father for another bike trip to Alaska.

This one, though, was cut short, though, when the couple found out their son was planning an arrival much sooner than they expected.

Now that the younger John is 25 years old, he's planning on making the same bike trip to Alaska. The only difference is that he's doing it with a rare heart condition for a goal of advancing scientific research.

"Over the course of the journey, I will collect various health, visual, and geospatial data through a variety of mobile devices to construct 'big data' that I will work with during my graduate studies in the field of statistics," Schwenck said on a GoFundMe toward his trip.

"With the advancements of artificial intelligence and cloud computing in recent years, there is a whole untapped arena of interdisciplinary research yet to be explored. In an era of such prevalent use of mobile technology, my goal is to help contribute to the fields of neuroscience, cardiology, physiology, and navigation systems by developing new methods for analyzing such data."

Schwenck had biked more than 550 miles as of Friday morning and was on day 12 of his trek, nearly halfway through Ohio.
